Santa Came And Board Game Festive fun with Scythe.

Well I hope you had a great Christmas.
I must have been a good boy this year to get all of these gaming goodies this year.

With family commitments I have not been able to crack open the box to shade spire yet but I have managed to get some gaming in.

It's been family games such as The Christmas Quiz and the good old Pub Quiz that have been the order of play as you do during christmas not forgetting Pictionary oh and the Chase card game.

One game that I did play with the family was a board game called Liar Liar. The object is to go around the board and ask a question and you give an answer to a question which you could chose to be a truth or a lie. if you made your own lie you would get added bonus .
If you lie and you are not called out on it you get a lie token if you make your own answer and its not called out you get 2.
You need these as one lie tokens gives you one shot at asking a question at the end to win the game.

Lets just say with 6 people it was long as if you get caught out you got to the start of the level which there are three...It also turns out i'm not good at lying....

I think The Case or the Pub Quiz was better for us all in this case.

Yesterday saw a gathering at the Creative Biscuit for the monthly meet up.
Riot wanted to make sure people were going due to the holidays and said Tim wanted to play a new board game he got for christmas...after asking what it was Riot replied some game called Scythe...

I have been wanted to play Scythe ever since I saw it on kickstarts and seeing the amazing art work
by Jakub Rozalski.

This game even though has mechs its not about fighting (but you can) its about owning land and making recourses which are needed to build, feed your workers and make mechs to be able to expand your empire across the board. Fights can make you lose popularity and power is needed to make mechs as well as oil.
So what ever you do will cost you something from your resources.
Who thought a game about farming would be so popular.

Riot proceeded to read the rules out to us all (Ed, Macca and Tim also playing) which lets just say was a little long and did not make a lot of sense at first due to all the cards and resource tokens and tracker templates.

I chose the Russian faction, Ed The Germanic faction, Macca The Norse Faction, Riot chose the Chinese Faction and Tim was the Polish faction.

We also had to chose a random game board and I had mechanical which was a little tricky as my only resource I could get straight off did not help much.

To end the game you had to get 6 stars and these could be won by for example by building all 4 of your buildings, meeting a secret objective or getting maximum popularity.
This does not mean you win the game it just means the game ends you have to count up all your resources money etc to see if you win.

The first time we had a go it was a little hit and miss due to all the little wooden pieces and how the tracker works etc and not many mech fights happened which is based on bluff system as you use your power up to 7 and a combat card which has a number you add to the power you used. If you beat the defender he runs back home and you get all the resources on that tile. The attacker also wins if its a draw.
The game is strategic as theres no one way to play and you can't chose to do the same thing for instance move twice in a row (except if you were my faction as thats its special ability) but we started to get the hang of the game after about two turns.
As the first game drew to a close after Ed got all 6 starts we all decided to try and blast through a second game. I can tell you we all learned from the mistakes from the first game and really got the hang of it.

In the end the winner was Riot.
You can see he was very happy about it.

At the end of the game we could all see why this game has won awards as it has a solid rule set that once you get down to playing is easy to pick up. The game has by the looks of things a lot of life to it. We all want another go Tim is even said about looking at the Airship expansions and the other factions already.

So we now approach  the new year. I won't be able to have time to make a year in review but these last few months have been great. I look forward to more painting and rolling dice.
Happy 2018!
